[…] Ivan Maximov - […] is a loner, he scripts, makes art and animation for his films. Maximov is a graphic artist. His animation films are mostly monochromic and inhabited by funny and touching creatures living their weird life. Generally it is the music that ties motion and movement in Maximov’s films, so it’s no coincidence that several compositions’ titles named his best animations. He is incredible creative; his films are filled with gags, as killingly grotesque as all his films. Despite looking like a trick, his films are pure poetry in which the sentimentality beats the humour. […]

[…] As a director of Heart of a Dog V.Bortko was thinking about everyday and cozy perspective of Bulgakov and banked on tasty acting – Yury Shaigardanov met this challenge professionally. In The year of the Dog he transformed a common village into a deserted zone managed to create an image of a god-forsaken burned land, the last hiding place for doomed fugitives. […] In The Land of the Deaf he makes us feel and believe not a “historical” Moscow, but a wild aggressive city, wasting its life on the edge of reality and fever, chasing the phantoms of love, power and money. His camera as one of the characters of this film […] shows a specific cynical Moscow romance […]
