The house on Karavannaya street, a part of an architectural ensemble of Manezhnaya square, was built in 1914-1916 by K.Bobrovsky and B.Botkin, graduates from Arts Academy. The project was inspired by an Italian palazzo of late Palladian architecture of the XVI century.
At first the building was occupied by a bank, several shops in the basement and a concert hall with a cinema theatre on the second floor, which was called “Splendid Palace”. It was opened in 1917 and became one of the best cinema theatres in Petrograd.
On the 7th of November 1918 there was a premiere of the first Soviet feature film “Crowding”, based on the script by Lunacharsky, It should be underlined that in 1924 a young student of the Conservatory D.Shostakovich worked nights as an accompanist here.
After WW2 the building was under the reconstruction. On the 12 of July 1948 there was an opening of the first Leningrad children cinema theatre “Rodina”.
New stage of life here started in 1959. The cinema hall and the upper floors were reconstructed. In 1960 it was opened for a cinema centre of our city - St.Petersburg Filmmaker’s Union and the Cinema House.
The movie schedule of the Cinema House is shaped with a particular care and meant for an extremely strict audience.
Presently the Cinema House is one of the most popular places in the city where you may watch classical and contemporary films, premiere and retrospective screenings, short films made by beginners and famous directors.
A lot of film fans from all over the world attend different film festivals at the Cinema house.
